Out of New Berlin (N.Y.) Milford Academy by way of Boca Raton (Fla.) High, running back Keith Byars II picked up an offer from Purdue and committed to the Boilermakers during this weekend’s official visit to West Lafayette.
Byars is the nation's No. 3 ranked prep school RB according to 247Sports.
Byars said he also considered Cincinnati. Coming out of high school, the 5-foot-10, 190-pound Byars had several offers from the likes of Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Rutgers and Vanderbilt.
“When I came up here I fell in love with the campus and the coaching staff and that did it for me,” Byars said. “I felt comfortable and I felt it was the best fit for me.”
Byars is ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 3 prep school running back and No. 34 prospect overall. He becomes commit No. 21 for Purdue in the class-of-2013 and the third running back, joining David Yancey and Keyante Green.
Under new head coach Darrell Hazell, Purdue started recruiting Byars three weeks ago.
“When Purdue came around I had my mind made up,” he said. “When I came up here that sealed the deal. I had my mind made up about Purdue for a while.
“I have the utmost respect for Coach Hazell. He’s a great guy and he knows what he’s doing. He did real good at Kent State. The coaching staff is perfect. They have big goals and big plans and the players I talked to said things are already turning around and the coaching staff has big plans for them and I want to be part of that.”
Byars is the son of former Ohio State standout and NFL veteran running back Keith Byars.
